Hey guys looking for some onsite as the book is not to informative. I believe I may or may not need to adjust clutch. I have an 81 to 84 kawi Gpz 550 with the kz550D motor. Cable goes from lever to engine side cover on rite side by oil fill plug. Lately down shifting is seeming hard to find neutral. What's the trick on clutch adjustment ? The only adjustment I see is on cable which is at the lever. I am getting some new parts to get this Lil beast up in shape so before I go n get a clutch kit I wanna adjust cable. I'm thinking of getting a new cable as to adjustment at handle is almost all the way out. Thanks

Those right side clutch releases are kinda weird. If there isn't a mid-cable barrel adjuster, then all you can do is try the adjusting nuts at the clutch cover & the thumb wheel adjuster at the lever. There should be the correct amount of freeplay at the lever. When you pull in the lever until there's resistance, the gap should be 3-5mm, probably (?). If doing the adjustments doesn't help, then your next step is probably to replace the cable.

On my bike there is no clutch cover. I do c a rubber clump maybe a cover of some sort mid way on cable but assumed it was a protected of the cable from where it lays under the carbs. I will have to look into that a Lil further. Thanks. Will post my findings.

Um, the right side clutch cover has the oil filler cap & the clutch adjuster attached to it. I meant the nuts on either side of the clutch cable bracket there on the clutch cover, thinking you'd know what I meant. doh.

This information came from the Kawasaki manual for a late model KZ440LTD, which, from your description, has the same clutch cable set-up.

1. Slide the dust cover at the clutch cable lower end out of place.
2. Loosen the nuts, and slide the lower end of the clutch cable to give the cable plenty of play.
3. Loosen the knurled locknut at the clutch lever just enough so that the adjuster will turn freely, and then turn the adjuster to make a five to six millimetre gap between the adjuster and locknut.
4. Take up all the cable play by sliding the lower end of the cable, and then tighten the nuts.

WARNING: Be sure that the outer cable end at the clutch lever is fully seated in the adjuster and the clutch lever, or it could slip into place later, creating enough cable play to prevent clutch disengagement.

5. Slide back the dust cover at the clutch cable lower end.
6. Turn the adjuster at the clutch lever so that the clutch lever will have two to three millimetres of play, and tighten the knurled locknut.

NOTE: After the adjustment is made, start the engine and check that the clutch does not slip and that it releases properly.

Hope this is of some use to you.
