My service manual says side clearance standard is 0.45 - 0.55 mm and the service limit is 0.70 mm. No up and down movement is crucial to a sound bottom end.

You measure the side play with a feeler gauges. Pull the rod to one side and see how much space is in the gap, then check the other side. The two sides should measure the same.
Side play is normal and should be there as FPMXer has stated and given the spec for, and as he already stated there should be no up and down (radial) play at all.

This can't be measured with a vernier caliper or outside micrometer.
