This question is about a Vulcan 800 classic.

I was thinking about customizing the stock pipes on my bike. The plan is to cut off the muffler section and weld on about 16 inches of straight pipe. I would then paint them black and rap the pipes in heat wrap to about a third of the way down. I think this would look good and it would let me keep the stock bends in the pipe.

Is something like this feasible? Should any automotive machine shop be able to do the welding? How much would something simple like this cost? I was looking at the pipes today and they seem to be plaited, would this affect how you have it welded and painted?

depends on what it is plated with. some platings are very dangerous to weld on. it probably would just need to be bead blasted then welded. it will prpbably take some work to blend it after welding so there isnt a ring around the pipe. then you have to worry about mounting them. cant just leave them hanging. you are still going to have to worry about at the ends of the pipe, even if you wrap it 1/3 the rest is still gonna get hot. good luck........... I personally dont think you will be pleased with the results. i really dont think you realize how much work it will be to do this. it is not like you just cut the old and stick on the new. if you want it to look good it is going to take some work.

Sounds like a cool idea. The pipes would look like something off one of Russ Mitchels bikes. I would sugest you buy a second set of stock pipes off ebay, they useually go for around $50 and try it with those. A lot of guys on the VROC forums just give away there stockers for the price of shipping so you shouldn't have any trouble finding a set. Be sure to post pictures when your done.

yammahoppy- This is realy just an experament, I just want to know if it would be easy to do and will not cost alot of money.

Crue- That is where I got the idea to do this. The reason I am willing to give it a try is that I can always buy a pair of stocks for so cheap if I copleatly mess them up.

So how much should I expect to pay to have this done?

as far as materials cost maybe $10-20. building them would be easy and cheap, the finishing is where the expence would come from. and actually after installing my new pipes, it wouldnt be difficult at all. the stockers are "glued" together where the muffler attached. the big problen would be finding the right size pipe. I may look at doing that with my stockers. might make some ground pounders out of them. sounds like a fun project.
