my friends 82 650 csr forks seem to "lock" in the straight position. He says it is built that way. Another friend says the race bearing has "rusted" a slot in it. I myself don't think it was built that way. When I rode it, it felt weird going into turns. Anybody know what the deal is?

it's not supposed to be that way, the bearings need to be replaced. My 81 LTD was like that, makes the handling pretty goofy, and kinda scary if you take your hands off the bars (how else am I going to sip my latte and answer my cell phone while riding?).

get a new set of all balls tapered bearings and change them out, it not a huge job but takes some time.

what happens over time is the bearings will wear into the races, and create a groove in them, it happens faster when the grease is old or hard.
