I just purchase a 99 ninja ZX-6 what is the difference between the ZX6r ZX6E ZX636?

There are many differences... the bike you have was the ZX-6R in 99. Today it is called and sold as the ZZR-600. The ZX-6E is another bike... check out this page: zx6e.net - Model years, the comprehensive list.

The ZX-6R of 2003-2006 has a 636 engine.. I reiterate they're all very different bikes.

He actually made a mistake... the one in your picture is the 99 ZX6e... the one that is sold as the ZZR today is the 99 ZX6.

Ok you guys have really got me confused


I think the best way I can tell the difference is in the vin# but looking @ the seat on my bike it doesnt match the ZX 6R or the ZX6e hmmm So now I dont know what model I need to order parts I will be picking up the bike Friday Morning I will look @ the vin # guys and I will shed some light on this

It will all make sense if you just take a bunch of pictures with labels on them... the 636 i think is what really throws off new comers.... its a random insert to the collection.

Your pic is very small, but I'm thinking this is what I'm seeing... if so, it is a ZX-6R. Headlight is different from the following year ZX-6Rs and the present ZZR-600, but it is still a ZX-6R. Here's a good pic I found.

If the bike in question is the one in your avatar, then it looks to me like a '99 ZX6R. Either way, what xeon and Jason said is correct - the best way to find out is by checking the VIN.

One of the bikes I bought this year was advertised as an '03 ZX6RR on Craigslist. It looks just like a ZX6R 636, and even has the ZX6R stickers on the side, so I thought either the guy typo'd or just didn't know what he was talking about. It wasn't until I plugged in the VIN to get insurance that it was confirmed that it indeed is a ZX6RR. I didn't care either way, as both bikes have something more to offer over the other, but are similar enough that I got the kind of bike I wanted.
