i'm not sure about the older years, but newer 500r's have a cleanable cloth type filter element that you can clean and oil instead of replacing it. the user's manual that comes with the bike reccomends replacing it every 5 cleanings. i plan on replacing it with either air pods and rejet for it, or a k&n stock replacement filter, whichever i can afford at the time.
