Yo,
I've got a 93 meanie-trouble is the final drive casing has gone from a bright polished-laquered type finish to a very dull matt grey --I DO NOT use chemicals to clean / only water, soap / wax---
Does anyone else have this problem, the rest of the bike is of as new condition!!

PirateMan, the finish you describe seems to be the clearcoat from the powder-coated differential. Usually what removes this clearcoat is some type of harsh detergeant, like an engine degreaser. Maybe the soap or wax that you use removed the clearcoat. I don`t know, try to mask off the surrounding areas and spray clear coat on the differential.
