Can anyone offer advice on how to tell if the final drive is too hot? I changed the oil in my Classic, used Valvoline 80-90W semi-synthetic and filled it to the oil check\fill hole with the bike level.

I never bothered to check the temps before, but now after riding for a couple of hours the housing is hot enough that you won't leave your hand on it for long. No leaks... I checked and the oil is still at the thread level. It seems fine otherwise but I would like to know how to tell what's normal.

Thanks.

The gear boxes do tend to generate a lot of heat. If you are not hearing any abnormal noises or dont notice any vibrations from the rear then I would say that it is normal.

Thanks.... I appreciate the reply. This summer is going to make the case a scorcher. But it's smooth and quiet, no cuttings in the oil or any binding that I can see so I'll keep looking forward. 8)
