Friend just removed his, said they were not needed. His was still running at 99K miles. He also said if they come apart, you may be buying a new head...

Edit: and you will need a good battery in it to crank OK.

You should probably stick with the battery that your bike is designed for. Even it you could physically fit a larger battery, your alternator and voltage rectifier/regulator might not be too happy about it. But if the battery is fresh and if you look after it, it should work. It just won't last as long with the compression release mechanism removed.
