The starter solenoid has two large terminals, one comes from the battery positive terminal, and the other goes to the starter motor. It's purpose is to complete the path for the high current needed to turn over the engine when the start button is pressed. It makes no difference which cable goes where, just so they reach and are not stressed making the connections.
I'd disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent the excitement of sparks,smoke, and melted insulation if the positive cable touches the frame and shorts out the battery!!!!!
