Don't think you're dumb, you picked a very good bike to start off with.

IMHO I wouldn't put any more money into the bike for the first year, concentrate on getting the most out of it as you can by learning to ride it correctly.

Nice starter or perm bike CaptDimez. I would do like Uncle-B said and let it roll as is until you get familiar with it. You may like it the way it is. Or you will have a better idea of what mods you would like or not like. Or you may end up trading it in on something totally different! And then you would have waisted your money for mods on a bike you didn't keep.

I say wait until your a little more intimate with it then the answers will come to you. When they do, there are a lot of guys on here that can help steer you in the right directions then.

Welcome to the Kawi forum :)

Hey Capt, the EX500 is the model number designation from Kawasaki. When the bike was originally introduced it was called the EX500. When the makeover happened in '94 the bike became the Ninja 500R here in the 'States, but Kawasaki still kept the model number as EX500. You can click here for a thread about performance modifications to your Ninja 500. Honestly, if you just want a little boost in low end speed and don't mind sacrificing some top end (who needs to do 120 mph on the highway anyway?) you can just change out the sprockets. Much, much cheaper than a new exhaust and jet kit. I think the sprockets will run you about $15-20 for each but a full exhaust kit (exhaust and jets) will cost over $300 (that is the cheapest I have found). If you really want more true power and want to change the sound then do the exhaust. Me, I'm looking at changing the gears and keeping the quiet stock lawnmower sound. I don't need to be waking up the neighbors when I ride by bike. When it comes to brands of exhaust to use I have always heard Muzzy was the best way to go because Rob Muzzy loves Kawas and makes his pipes for them. But they aren't cheap. Good luck!

You select a jet kit based upon your modifications, going bigger will make your bike run poorly.

I wouldn't suggest changing your front sprocket, I tried a -1 in the front and the gearing was just too low. killed mileage too. +2 in the rear would be as much as I'd ever suggest. You can get some F1 slip ons and not have to rejet your carbs and also make your bike louder. That'd be the cheapest thing to do.

You diffinetly need to get some miles under you before you start making the bike faster, and then you will know what kinda faster you want. Sometimes just throwing aftermarket performance parts to a bike make it the complete opposite of what you want, but it is your money, just ride safe and welcome.
