I would never say never, but this doesn't seem to be the style of Japanese companies. On the other hand, the incredibly weak dollar and weaker than ususal Harley sales does make this a good time for a foreign company to buy.

If it were to happen, the most likely candidates would be either a European bike manufacturer or European car manufacturer... or a Saudi oil prince who likes Harleys :)

I found this:

Mon Jun 25, 2007 7:36AM EDT

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Honda Motor Co. (7267.T: Quote, Profile, Research) has denied it is looking to buy Harley-Davidson Inc. (HOG.N: Quote, Profile, Research), rumors of which had sent the U.S. motorcycle maker's shares surging in New York on Friday.

"There's absolutely no truth to it," Honda spokeswoman Makiko Yoshida said in Tokyo on Monday.

Despite skepticism from analysts and market participants, Harley-Davidson shares and options surged, with 58,535 options changing hands on Friday -- more than 14 times the daily average, according to figures from market research firm Track Data.

Its share price gained as much as 6.4 percent before closing Friday's session up $2.43, or about 4 percent, at $62.55 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Shares in Honda, the world's biggest motorcycle maker, reacted little in Tokyo, ending up 0.5 percent on Monday at 4,420 yen

Man...I would LOVE to see all the Harley posers try to criticize our metrics if this ever happened. That would be a crow-eating festival to see!!!!

This was discussed on hdforums.com a while back. they all know that Honda can easily afford to gulp up Harley-Davidson. I don't recall it really ruffling any feathers. I doubt it will actually happen.

They get hot and bothered over on hdforums everytime this subject comes up, and it seems to come up often. I'm not sure what Honda would want with HD, but every time the rumor hits HD stock goes up - makes you wonder.

I don't see it happening......but i can understand why honda would the would be king of the industry no question about it worldwide. I am sure the HD guys would say its still "built in america" because the aren't going to move the operations over seas if it does happen.

In addition to "Hardly Davidson," think of all the cool new buzz words that would be created. Like maybe...

Harley David-san
or
American Rice

Actually, as indifferent as I am to Harley Davidson, I hope this never happens.

That's a shame. I've always believed in the saying; “It’s not WHAT we ride.... It's THAT we ride".
No, but we're in the minority. I hang out on several Harley and Metric forums and the Harley bashing is about 10 to 1 on the Metric forums vs. the Metric bashing on the Harley forums.
