Freakinout is right about top end and power with his list...IF, however you are not going to use the topend speed that you have available to you then you could change the gearing so that you could effectivle increase the power. Instead of turning out the 130-140 top end you would lose soem of it but have some awesome power with respect tto the slower speeds...depending upon how much power you want at what speed. IF you want to see what I mean, go to the dealer and purchase a one tooth Smaller Countershaft sprocket (the front one on your bike). You will have to adjust the rear wheel and rear brake (NOTE DO NOT forget to adjust your rear brake after you do this.) Be careful because first gear will want to pull te wheel off the ground real easy and second will do the same...once you experience just the one tooth larger sprocket you will understand what I mean. It is one of the cheapest things that you can do. IF you were out on the highways cruising al of the time then you would notice that the gearing now reduces the gas mileage, some, but you probably won't notice unless you are doing long distance driving. You will notice how front end happy your bike gets though when you go shifting up through the gears.
Does not the brake linkage need to be reset when you change the rear wheel setting? When you put on a Larger Front sprocket you needd to adjust your rear wheel forward for the same length in chain, unless you change the chain length...so if you move the rear wheel forward and did'n adjust the rear brake linkage you wouldn't have much, if any rear brake?
You were talking about a smaller front sprocket weren't you?
In which case you would move the wheel back, ??though really I guess you should take a link out of the chain??
The Ninja 500R has a rear disk brake, so it should not need adjusting. I never adjust mine when I adjust the chain.
The EX500A (87-93) has a drum brake, so that may been adjusting.
Thought you had been looking for a 500R.
The main differences between the A and D are
A 16" front wheel
D 17" front wheel
D has bigger forks, but no drain plugs in forks
A has front disk on left
D has front disk on right
A has rear drum brake
D has rear disk
I'm pretty sure the rest is cosmetic. Knowing the differences is useful when looking at second hand stuff, you can easily tell which is which. I'm pretty sure the A has a silver painted frame, where as the D has a black one, but don't quote me on that one.
