How to Replace Clip on Controls???

Well my blinkers don't work on the right side so I decided to change the controls. Great, found one for a low low price online. Actually swapping the controls itself was a breeze, however when I started to connect the wiring it goes into the frame.

My quetion: does the tank have to come off to do this or any other major parts or am I not seeing an opening that I can reach up and connect the wiring?
