My husband Shorttail just installed one on his bike. He ran the power source from the headlight and followed the wiring down the tank. Installed it on the side panel. Made just a small hole to insert it. It looks great and is protected from weather.
That's exactly what I wanted to do. Looks great.

i like that.. nice and clean and basically hidden... sorta what i did with my garage door opener button...

on the 900 the power tap under the sat and the power tap in the headlight bucket are the same feed, both hot all the time and both feed off of the accessory fuse
 
That is a steering lock....locks the bars all the way to the left, if I remember right.
 
btw, the white/blue wire in the headlight bucket is the hot wire.....just put an accessory outlet on my bike. Now I gotta wait for the wife to return with the Jeep so I can try it out.
 
I got a Kury cigarette light/accessory plug and mounted it to the handle bars.

Little expensive but I've had it for 4 years on two different bikes, never a problem. I direct wired it to the battery.

I have a 2009 900LT as well. I installed the 12V accessory plug on mine and it works great. I'm having a problem with the batter though. Along with the accessory plug, I also installed amplified speakers, battery charge indicator and boogey lights, all directly wired to the battery. When I turn off the bike, I always make sure that everything is powered off (speakers are turned off, lights are turned off and nothing is plugged into the accessory plug). I've noticed that since installing these accessories 3 months ago, my battery seems to be dying quickly. For instance, I ride for 70+ miles one day, when I get home, the battery is fully charged and everything is turned off. I come out 3 days later and the battery is low (not quite dead, but not enough to start the bike). Then, I fully charge the battery with a battery tender, ride for 70+ miles, come home, turn everything off, let the bike sit for a week and the battery is totally dead.

Do the accessories (amplified speakers, accessory plug, lights and battery indicator) still draw juice from the battery, even when they're powered off? That's the only thing I can think of as to why the battery is dying so quickly. If so, what should I do? I found an extra lead that is only "live" when the bike is on, but when I put the meter on it, it's only a 10Amp circuit and I'm afraid that if I run the accessories off this 1 lead, I'll burn out that circuit.

It would be impossible to tell if any of your components are drawing power (when they're turned off) unless you disconnect them and run a multimeter in series in AMP mode to test for current flow. Another way would be to disconnect them from the battery negative terminal and then touch the lead to a chassis ground and look for a spark. Both methods would be a decisive way to know if they are drawing power. The best way to isolate these components from constant power is with a relay. You could have the relay turn off with the ignition so they have no current flowing to them when the bike is not running. It's a cheap any easy way to protect your battery.
 
Thanks for the help. What would be the recommended solution for the relay? Should I install a fuse block to run all the accessories to and then from the fuse block, to a relay, to an in-line fuse and then to the battery? What kind of relay should I get? Do you have any sources or pictures for installation steps?
 
I have a 2009 900LT and would like to install a 12 volt power plug to power various accessories; eg, GPS, phone charger, etc. Has anyone had exprience doing this and, if so, how did you tap into electrical system and where and how did you mount the plug?
