My son is 8 and wants to go for his first ride with me, but I need to get him a lid.

Given the rate at which children grow, do the same rules about helmet fitment apply to a kid or do you typically get it like a jacket or shes with "a little room"?

It's a catch 22 I suppose. God forbid something hapens, i want the helmet to fit right, however, I don't want hin to wear it twice and then replace it.

I can only say what my dad did- he bought our helmets one size too big when we were that age and made us wear progressively thinner hats underneath as we grew.

What a great idea!
Ol' Dad was no dummy :)! I can say from experience that doing it that way to keep the helmet fitting moderately right worked very well in the dirt and sand where I learned to ride. With many, many spills the helmet never came off or got slung sideways. But keep an eye on it and don't trust the kid- he'll go for comfort over function every time. DAMHIK ;).
