Strictly speaking :)

The KZ1000P motor is much more closely related to the KZ1000M CSR motor than the KZ1000J (Standard) motor. All 3 are the 998cc motor, but the actual J has different cams, carbs, and no tach drive on the head.

With the KZ1000J being rated at 102 hp, and the others rated at 92 hp, I'd say the KZ1000J cams. According to the manual the KZ1000J cam have more lift and duration than the other two, but the KZ1000J doesn't have a tach drive (electronic tach). If looking for used ones you need to look at the rings on the cams to identify them (the manual explains) as the KZ1000K LTD has an electronic tach also.

83-84 GPz1100 cams are the hottest factory cams made for the 1000/1100 motors.

My '81 CSR 1000 w/J1 motor has a gear drive tach.I just changed the o ring/tach seal
Of course it does, it's a KZ1000M CSR, not a KZ1000J, or a KZ1000K :)
I think the P models have a cable tach also, but I'm not sure.

I'm not sure you understand what I'm saying.

82 KZ1000 models (chain drive)

KZ1000J, the Standard model with a fairly flat seat and front axle mounted under the forks at the bottom (like a proper motorcycle), electronic tach. Notice the "J"?
102 hp

KZ1000M CSR, wire wheels, stepped seat, axle mounted about three inches above the bottom of the fork tube, cable operated tach.
92 HP

KZ1000K LTD, basically a CSR with mag wheels, electronic tach, and a mini dash on the handlebars.
92 hp

KZ1000P CopCycle, basically a CSR with mods for the cops.
92 hp (maybe even a little less).

Thing is, all these bikes share the same basic motor, the commonly called "J" motor. But only one bike, the actual KZ1000J, has 102 hp

Sure makes things difficult when you're looking for an actual KZ1000J 102 hp motor (as I was for awhile).
