Okay, not really.... but i was wondering why everyone always covers up their plates when they post pics online? What can someone really do with a plate #? 500 people see my plate every time i take it out.....

So whats the purpose of doing so?

License plates from all 50 states, for several years now, have a watermark etched into the very essence of the material that they are made from. Although this watermark cannot be seen by the naked eye, it contains your personal information that can be obtained by law enforcement should you not have any identification with you.

Law enforcement is that last piece of this puzzle to catch up with this technology, and through infra-red technology & spectrum anaylization they will be able to do away computers, radios, etc. when pulliing someone over as a lazer reflected off your plate will provide the info they need directly to their rear view mirror (In reverse of course, so they will be able to read it).

Hackers have known for years that through the combination of magnetized pixels (i.e., your monitor) and 3D glasses they are able to see into the 4th dimension wherein the watermark lies. The hacker does have to stare at the screen for quite some time in order to accomplish this (Therefore those who are not able to use in moderation suffer from 4th-dimensional disitis).

So, when online better safe than sorry when dealing with your personal info...

I always just figured that less is better. I mean wouldn't you cover up your plate (or just take it off) if you legally could? I'm sure everyone would answer yes. Well I can't stop people from seeing my plate out in the real world but I CAN stop them from seeing it online.

It saves some ******* calling up the cops with your plate number. "Yeah, I saw a red sport bike doing wheelie-donuts while punching a baby. His license number is...."

I'm sure there's lots of crap someone could get into with a vehicle description and a plate number...

we don't have any sort of info embedded into our plates...... the civil rights crowd would have a sh!t fit if they tried that on us...... but people here cover their plates because it is assumed that they (the bad guys) can find out where you live and steal your vehicle. Personally, it has never bothered me.

People can use a Roladex to get your info from your tag. Or they can just go to the local DMV and pay to get your info from your tag. I liked the fourth-dimension explanation better!

There are lots of nutjobs on the internet, and it is easy to get a lot of personal information from an LP. With that information, you can get more information. Some states restrict that information, some don't. I have already had my identity stolen once, and I have enough bad guys that already don't like me, so I blank out my LP in pictures. We had a case here some years back (before they restricted LP info) where a salesman got the hots for a woman he saw working at a local bank. He got her LP, went down and got her address and had stalked her for about a week, when she noticed him watching her. She told her daddy about it and daddy took care of it before anything happened. Did I mention that her daddy was the County Sheriff? Salesman didn't know that either - he got quite a shock when some of daddy's boys paid him a visit. :)

You know, when I was a teen I had a neighbor that didn't like me... The used to do crap like that to me... I'll never understand how she got the cops to believe I was doing burn shows in my 1986 automatic ford escort...
