There are two very common factors that impact the torque converter releasing as it should. The most common is a dirty carburetor that someone has turned the idle too high to keep it running when it is cold. The next most common problem is poor clutch or belt maintenance and the clutch is not releasing when it should when the idle is properly set.

The manual choke cable can also be improperly set and not fully releasing the choke, which results in a high idle and belt dragging which causes transmission grinding when in neutral.
