I found this site awhile ago but had trouble logging in :-| Last fall I acquired a 1983 KZ 550LTD M1 (shaft drive), like new with only 12,000 miles on it, but it was too late in the season to ride it much. The bike had been stored by the original owner since 1995 and was taken out of storage due to an impending forest fire.
I live in a valley beach town surrounded by mountains. I wanted to ride with my friend on a 2000 Harley but I didn't want to spend that kind of money and all last winter I wondered how the 550LTD would climb the mountain passes around here eg 20 miles of 7-9% uphill grade with a 70 mph speed limit. Well it turned out just fine, the bike now has about 16,000 miles on it, everything works perfectly, and it is just the nicest all round bike to own and ride. I especially like it's CV carbs, electronic ignition, high revving engine, shaft drive, 6 spd transmission, pep power and pickup, reliability, and fuel economy.
