First mods if this needs to go else where please by all means....

I have recently purchased my first bike (93 600R Ninja C model) in very great mechanical working order(knock on wood). The only thing wrong with the bike is that it was layed over on the rightside and the upper and lower fairing is cracked. Well no fear ebay was there and I purchased all new pieces for the bike for two hundred bucks. Well I am a very good Do It Yourselfer and I wanted to get some suggestion on how to go about preping and primming the bike to get it ready for the pros at the paintshop. My only concern is that everyone I talk to says I have to sand down to bare plastic to get the paint to stick..

Question 1) Is this true do I have to sand down to bare plastic. What do I use to prime the plastic? or are my pieces fiberglass??

Please help me in this matter, I am in no where near ready to place the soon to be newly painted pieces on the bike, I would just like a good winter project.

Oh and by the way I love riding a bike, this is my first bike I have ever owned and I have taken the MSF course here in OKC, OK and it was well worth it. I have now sucsessfully riden over 300 miles in two days. I am still sticking to quite country roads and nonbusy city streets, but I am having a blast.

Great bike and lots of fun for you ahead. paint prep is everything to a great paint job. If you are going to just use Duplicolor or a spray can on it by all means save yourself some time and just spray it. It will look crapy. If however you are going for an awesome paint job -- going to the plastic is nice, but not always necessary depending how much is being painted and type of material etc etc.

If you are going to have it professionally painted why not let them do all the prep and paint work then? If you want to DIY then pick up some wet sand paper and get down to it.

If you have OEM parts it will be most likely a FRP (Fiber reinforced plastic)or just plastic.

1adam12--Thanks for the responce, I am really looking for a professional job, so I guess I will go back out and start sanding, I was hoping to get away from that (oh well winter project). The reason I am doing this project myself is because most bodyshopes around here charge 35 buck an hour for prep work, well I can do the prep work.

TrashMonkey--Thanks for the responce, when preping your bike did you rough up the pieces to alow the primer to stick??? The reason I ask is that I might want to try this with my old body.

Again thank you both for the ideas, please people keep them comming and if anyone has a step by step I would love to hear it.

Prep away my friend. Since it will be a winter projet take your time and do a little each day. The end result will be a super nice glass finish prepped and ready to go.

What color are you going to make your bike?

I have not decided what color I am going to paint the bike I was thinking Base coat--Black
Flames--Silver, lined in a pin of Red

I don't know still deciding, I am also ordering a new pipe this next week from Vance and Hines.

I love this bike I rode for three hours today already and Its only 2 o'clock.

Welcome to the forum! Take your time on the prep work, it will show when you get it pained. The cool thing about bikes is, they are small, so you could try the do it yourself way first, and if it doesn't look good enough, prep it again, and try it again or have the pro's shoot it. Most important thing to remember is to HAVE FUN!

Well I have great news, I was talking to the local auto paint supply shop and they made the suggestion that I go and talk with the local VoTech school in the area, and that they were always needing projects to work on. So I called the VoTech and talk to the guy who runs the paint and body department and he said that if I wasn't in a hurry that they could do all of the prep work and paint the bike for free, all I had to do was supply the materials. COOL Huh, all the satisfaction with none of the work. I am very excited and can't wait to get all of the pieces into him tommarrow morning. So if you are looking to get a pro job for just the cost of the materials call your local VoTech. He also told me that if I didn't like the job that they would just redo it for me. He showed me pics of bike and cars that they had done and they all looked sweet to me. I will let you all know how it turns out tommarrow.

What I would like now is a whole new set of screws to place on the bike instead of the old dirty ones that are holding up the fairings now. Does anyone know where I can get a set???

first bike? have you been riding awhile? just asking, since most people I talked to when I first got a bike told me I was going to lay it down/dump it. I haven't yet and you might not either. Just a thought to keep the wrecked plastics on for awhile in case of a "mishap".

grilldcheese--Yes this is my first bike and yes I have dropped it and fallen over on it. I am no looking to put on the new parts right now but just getting every thing ready so when I do feel comfortable I can. THanks for all of the responces.
