well around here valve clearance is about $130 then they probably will charge another hundred or two to do the cam chain and tensioner (of course that is only adjusting, IE if parts need to be replaced) and of course you could save alot of money by buying your own spark plugs and oil/filter and changing them yourself because the dealership will charge about 30-50 bucks for just the oil change depending on the bike specs and sparks might be another 50 or more depending on the bike. you could easily save one hundred dollars just simply doing those two yourself. now these are what the local around here do, i couldnt tell you what it is around your area but hopefully it would be much more maybe even cheaper

To replace the cam chain, most shops will do a quote based on yanking the engine and splitting the cases. I can't see a shop doing this for "another hundred or two".

The valve adjust will be a couple hours shop rate and shims... should be around $200 based on what type shop does the work. A Kaw dealer will be in the neighborhood of $75 an hour I suspect.

On most bikes, there are cam chains available with master links which save you from pulling the engine. The big issue with pulling the engine and splitting the engine cases is that every case gasket mating surface has to be cleaned ... this can be time consuming and tedious. The chain tensioner swap won't buy you more tension unless the internal spring is tired which is doubtful...

I strongly suggest you get the valves adjusted ASAP as you are way overdue for this service and if you plan on keeping the bike, you are in danger of doing the bike damage without this service being done. The "cam chain rattle" you hear may not be rattle but pinging, by the way.

well i took it in today.i talked to the guys at the shop.since everything will be apart there isnt going to be a labor charge for plugs.its 275$ for labor i have no idea what im about to spend in parts.hopfully it wont be or 200 in parts.thank you all for the replys, and tips.this is my first bike and i bought used just incase somthing happend to it.it was badly neglected.people spend 3 grand in body work to make it look good but never had it serviced.40,000 miles and they gave it 1 oil change.
