Just got a 94 Ninja 600, bike is super fun for my first street bike. Only problem is I've got an issue with 2nd gear. When I shift to 2nd it hops back into neutral. I'll shift three and four times and everytime same result. All other gears work terrific. If it ever gets in 2nd and I give zero throttle, just ease slowly into it then sometimes it stays in gear thru the full pull, sometimes hops back out. When downshifting it always goes into 2nd and only at low speeds will it hop out. Does anybody have any clue what this could be? As well as how do I fix it myself? I"m pretty mechanically skilled, just never worked on a bike before.... plus i'm broke so if i want to ride this thing i've gotta fix her myself! Thankx

Sometimes it's caused from not applying enough up force on the shifter when shifting to 2nd. If this is the case it can usually be solved by adjusting the shift lever so it's neutral (normal resting) position is slightly lower than it is now. If that doesn't correct the problem then my first guess would be a bent shift fork. If yours has the adjuster built into the shift linkage, you can make the adjustment very easy and quickly. If it doesn't then you will have to pull the linkage off of the shift shaft and reposition it that way.

i'll give it a try

Thanks for the info. I'll give that a try when I'm back home tonight. Hopefully that's all the problem is! If not then I'm hoping replacing the shift forks isn't to expensive or complicated of a job so I can do it myself!
