hey everyone just joined the forum and sofar sounds like a very friendly and knowledgeable forum.so i bring this to everyones attention and hope that you can help the new guy out.i have a 1985 900 ninja and it died on me as i was heading out the driveway,i have no spark checket the coils they tested out OK-put new plugs in no difference. the bike rolls over but wont fire up, anyone have any idea what the problem might be.when the bike was running it was very rough at idle,are these bikes known for any particular problem with any of the ignition components.thanks

Nothing that I'm aware of other than age taking a toll on the coils and some develop cracks and corrosion in the wiring harness connectors. Did you test the coil input voltage?

yes tested the input to the coils and its up around 11.9v,also checked the resistance out of the coils and its within the range thanks for the reply.

Have you done any of the test for the pickup coil or igniter. There are only a few components so not a lot of testing for the complete system.

checked the igniter and only get a reading from pole #1 and 2 so i think thats the problem!going to replace it. i hear that the igniter is the same as the concours from 86-2001 do you know if they are infact the same.and thanks for the help.

Just a thought, you said it was running rough at idle. Have you cleaned the carbs? are there any mods to air flow? exhaust? Have the valves been adjusted? Have plugs and wires been replaced?

found the problem... pickup coil, didn't think that was the problem as i just replaced the pickup coils last season.thanks everyone for the help.
