So I just bought an 09 Vulcan with 8k on it. First bike I’ve had since a tragedy 20 years ago. Beautiful bike, I’ve been riding it daily all of a sudden to day I got to leave a buddies house after a short visit hit the start button and nothing. Let me also say I’m not a mechanic. So I checked out all the wires it has a brand new battery a month old. Found nothing wrong tried the button again started fine. Ran great. Stopped at the gas station walked out again nothing put it in gear, pulled clutch, rolled it back and forth, flipped the kill switch on and off a few times after about 5 minutes boom started like new. Got home tried it immediately after shutting it down nothing about 5- 10 minutes later nothing. Then I just hit it a few times sometimes it started sometime not. I can hear a little hum That sounds like from under the seat. The lights and everything come on when key is turned and The bike doesn’t have any safety switch lock out it can start in gear with clutch in, before anyone gets on it, in neutral and kickstand up or down doesn’t matter. Im assuming it’s the starter or solenoid. But to know for sure without have to spend a boat load of money.... I’m completely baffled because when it does start it’s like nothings wrong at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I had a no-crank condition with my 09 Vulcan. It was corrosion on the starter switch contacts. Cleaned and lubed the contacts, no problem since.

On an older bike, it's always a good idea to clean as many electrical connectors as you can find. Some electrical contact cleaner will help.

Plus 1 on the starter button. It is also a good idea to check all of the safety switches every once in a while. I got a bike from my brother in law and he always started it on the side stand in neutral. I drove away got gas and it wouldn't start. I was on the bike with the clutch pull in and the clutch switch was worn out and not making contact. I let the clutch out as I had the start button pushed and it cranked right up. Some bikes will stop as soon as you put the side stand down with the bike not in neutral, others you have to start to let the clutch out with the bike in gear and the side stand down for it to stop. If you are an a Vulcan 750 yours should be the second.

Thank you for all the info all. It’s just a little En500. I Didn’t even think about the safety switches being my 94 was the same way. (But never had an issue. I will be tinkering with it today, trying all your suggestions and update you, and for anyone else experiencing the same issue.
very appreciative to all of you. The superstitious side of me made me think my Deceased friend was sending me a message of course that tragedy 20 years ago and we all had brand new gsxr’s and he drove like a maniac. But the bike was in storage for 3 years befor I got it. Be back later today with a verdict hopefully. You guys rock!!!
