The problem was at first that it wouldn't start. So I took out the plugs, one dirty but the other had no gap. I set the correct one. The starter turned and turned, but the noise of the starter clutch missing was now gone, just the starter motor turning. I have a new starter clutch on order and I was hoping to make sure the bikes starts when I want to bring it to a garage for the starter clutch to be fitted. I tried to kickstart it. Compression is fairly low. I can now operate the kickstart with my hand. Occasionally when operating the kickstart with the ignition off, the compression returns briefly.

Nah, but all it was that the fuel tap was connected up properly and the plug leads not on properly. After that rode it thirty miles. Wasted thread really.
