Not sure how many of you have seen the latest installment of Rider magazine, but a few weeks ago I had asked about tire cupping on my Vulcan. There is a writeup in the Tech Q&A section in the magazine this month about that very topic. The short answer is that with all else being correct (such as air pressure), the general cause of cupping is from heavy acceleration out of corners.

Since it's coming from a mechanic with lots of experience, I'll take it as true. I can tell you that I am usually hard on the throttle out of corners, so it could be possible. However, I'm not going to take it easy for the next 10k miles on my current rear tire just to find out if it's true or not! :D
