The other day I began the work of getting my carb. I was able to get the tank off, but I couldn't figure out how to remove the fuel line where it wouldn't drain the tank. I just pulled all of the vacuum hoses off and left the fuel line hooked up. I laid the tank on a box to the left of the bike. What position should the petcock be on so no fuel will drain out? I tried it on PRI and it flowed like crazy. What's the trick on this one?

I just got the service manual and it says to put the petcock on "ON" or on "RES" to remove the fuel line. It does not say to drain the tank. I have no idea how that could work, because "ON" makes fuel go down the line, right? Unless there's some kind of flapper that only lets fuel down when the fuel pump is sucking it through. I'm going to experiment and see what results I get.

re

the petcock is automatic,it shuts off fuel when the engine is turned off
i've never taken it apart,so it must be some kind of check valve in there
i always drain the tank before removal just to keep from making a mess
