I cant' seem to find a 38 tooth rear steel rear sprocket for my 2000 VN 800 Classic so I want to know if I should just go with the 18 tooth front and keep the rear at stock 42 which gives a nearly identical ratio. QUESTION: Even though 17/38 vs. 18/42 gives nearly the same ratio, is there any advantage to doing one over the other? Thanks!

No, 18/42 is actually the most popular change. I have recently gone to 17/39 but if I were to do it again I would go wityh the 18/42.

I thought about the 17/39 because someone said it was a "happy medium" - what didn't you like about it?
