Have a 2009 ER-6N. Need to jack up to make suspension sag measurements. Can I just use the rear wheel lift stand I use for other maintenance that attaches to the rear axle or do I need to jack it up from under the center. If I have to jack from under the center how do I avoid damaging the muffler

As long as the load comes off the suspension, it does not matter how you do it.
Your rear axle lift will be perfect for the back wheel. How do you plan to do the front?
I thought that with the axel lift there would still be load, just not quite as much as when the wheel is on the ground. Front suspension is not adjustable so no need to do the front.

I would not advise lifting the bike by pushing on the exhaust system.

I have lifted my ZN1100 with two ratchet straps attached to the rear frame, but be careful to secure the forks so they cannot turn. You also need a solid overhead beam to attach the ratchet straps to.

I use one of these whenever I need to hold the bike vertical or restrain the front wheel.

I have lifted numerous sport bikes using a floor jack under the exhaust. I use a piece of wood to distribute the load across all the pipes and use the jack near the front close to the "going down" section.
