does anyone else become uncomfortable, while stopped, waiting for a break in the opposing traffic to turn left? i try to adjust my speed to avoid this, but doesn't always work. i feel like someone on a cell phone is going to run over me. twice in the last 2 months i've had cars pass me on the right on the grass.:icon_frow

I always try to avoid left turns unless there is a protected left turn pocket. I have no desire to become a hood ornament.
It's one of my biggest road rage things, that I have to tell myself to calm down about. I can't believe the knuckleheads that sqeeze by like you're not even there.
People are just so used to pushing to get where they are going, that they loose common sense completely.

Me too.
That's probably one of the more vulnerable situations for riders. In an identical situation, but with a car in front of them instead of a motorcycle, many drivers would behave differently. Car drivers just don't equate motorcycle and full road priviledges.

Ride safely,

Ride safely,
Unfortunately, neither do some motorcyclist. With privilege comes responsibility! Trying (even when successful) to put your cycle in half a lane is dangerous! And in most places, illegal!
I also avoid left turns.
i think it was our local paper that had a humorous article about this older couple who had been scoulded by their son for being gone so long while on errands in town. their excuse was they no longer made left turns because they were dangerous. so they make three rights.still no excuse for being gone over an hour longer countered the son. their sensible answer..it takes seven rights if you miss it the first time, eleven the second, etc:lol:
I always feel a litte shakey when I'm stopped making a left turn. I try and flash the brake light to get the drivers attention.

What Rich said! I will go all the way around a block to make a left at a light or change that left to a right.
Of course up here (PNW - and I'm sure in many other parts of this country) that really only adds a slight bit of safety.
When someone learns that I ride, the first statement is usually, "I wouldn't ride it's too dangerous". Then I ask the usual questions. Which brakes faster a car or a bike? Is a car or a bike better at avoidance on the highway? (My wife is rolling her eyes at this point) Do you tailgate bikes or give them one car length for each 10 MPH?. The answers will astound you. Many believe that we have the power to stop on a dime, do 90 degree turns at 70MPH. But the fun is when they admit to tailgaiting and I ask, "how would you feel if you ran over a rider because you were tailgaiting"? About this time my wife says I have to sell the bike. lol
I keep one eye peeled toward oncoming traffic, looking for a break, and the other eye stuck looking at the rear view mirror for oncoming. Difficult at times, but it is a real survival tool. I also have it in first gear and ready to pop the clutch to get out of there if necessary.
