I can buy a set of used Cobra slashcuts for my 05 800A. $50 plus UPS shipping. They are 98's and I think back then they only had the partial heat shield. The seller sent a pic of them on his bike. He says there's nothing wrong, of course. He put on new HK's and that's why he has them. Can you buy full heat shields, if I wanted to? Anyone know how much? I'll check with Cobra on that tomorrow. How long do pipes last? Probably should just go with new, right? Thanks up front for your replies.

AJ they'ed probably be alright, for $50 you not going in the hole to bad. The pipes will last quite a while, you might have to repack the baffles or replace them all together. Don't know about new heat shields, when you call an ask go ahead an ask about new baffles as well. Spending money on a bike is fun but its also nerve racking as well. You don't know which way to go new or used ,$350 or $450 for pipes, $250 to $600 for a seat. I'm just glad I'm past that for now. With that said once you decide what to buy,get it installed an enjoy because next winter will be right around the corner an you'll be back at thinking what your going to do next. Right know there isn't much else that I need to do to my bike. But it's winter an I'm thinking <BG> Already got some ideas, an it's gonna cost money. I't suppose to be sunny an 50 today, so I think a ride is in order an then I can enjoy what I have an quit thinking about what I want.

Thanks WC. Well, I found out that the back pipe is blued but if I can get full coverage heat shields it may be OK. On the baffles, I'm thinking that Cobras are not removable. I'm going to the Cleveland motorcycle show next weekend and I'll check it out there or call Cobra. I was hot on getting them but I don't think so now. Save a couple hundred bucks, which is great, but if you're not satisfied, it's going to be money lost. Plus, when I re-jet and get a new airbox, I think these kind of match the pipes. If I buy these used and then get new ones, it will probably have to be adjusted again. I'm going to get the bike dyno'd and everything, so I better do it right the first time. I'm getting the V&H Cruzers.

Going riding, huh. 50 degrees. I thought Bozeman was a hard winter kind of place. What's goin' on. I'm sick of winter and ready to ride.

I hear you 800AJAY....I'm sick of winter too! We have had some crazy weather so far this winter in Ohio. After the wicked snow & ice we got before Christmas with sub zero temps. Then 60's after the new year but we had SO much rain and a lot of
flooding. We now have about 8 inches of snow and heard it will possibly get down to
-15 degrees tonight....YUK! I uncovered the bike yesterday to move it....man i wanted to ride. Oh well....sorry to ramble on like this.

AJ, I've heard of pipes (particularly cobras) lasting a very long time and also heard of the same set of pipes being put on 3-4 different bikes. For fifty bucks you probably can't go wrong.

I have to agree....a very small investment and what better way than to find out for yourself.

I went to my dealer and bought a set of stock pipes for 30 bucks. I have removed the rear baffles, but haven't cleaned them up and installed them yet. I didn't want to debaffle mine because I may not like the sound, that way I can replace them. Some are saying they sound almost as good as Cobra slashcuts. I'll soon find out.

Talked to someone at Cobra today. The current model full heat shields won't work on older pipes. So it's a no go on these Cobra's. The pipes, rear one anyway, are blued. Not going to put something on that will make the bike look ****py.

Blue, I will be interested in hearing how they sound.

I don't blame you AJ ,You got a new ride put new pipes on it especially if your keeping it for awhile. The gutted stocker's sound good but from what i've heard the exhaust pipe on the stockers is a smaller diameter than the after market pipes which would reduce the flow rate. But that shouldn't matter until you do the intake. Stock pipes are cheap if not free so gutting them is a cheap mod that can always be changed later if so desired.

sounds like you made the right decision AJAY. it is always good to take a step back and evaluate your potential purchase. it wouldn't have been much money up front, but the main thing is that if you are not happy then what was the point. i learned that when i first bought my bike. the V&H pipes were backordered so i bought a set of Cobras instead. i wish i had just waited, because i ended up ordering the V&H pipes later and now the Cobras are sitting in my cellar waiting to be cleaned up so i can maybe sell them for $100 compared to the $475 that i paid for them ! oh well, lesson learned, but i will probably do it again !
