valve adjustment for a mojave 01

I finally got the mojave back that I co-signed for my cousin and to say the least, he didnt take care of it. I am in the porcess of adjusting the valves and I got the book for it, but I am still having porblems. I have the valve cover pulled and the piston is at TDC. I am having problems with knowing exactly where to take the valve clearance measurement. The book says between the valve stem and the end of the adjuster screw. The clearance should be about .008-.009. I am just having problems locating them. Any help would be great. The reason I decided to do this is because I know he never would of done it and it was making a horrible knocking noise when I got it started and the harder I ran it the louder it got. Should I check anything else?

That helps out! I know exactly what to do know. I just hope that it cures the problem. I will get to it this weekend and let you know how it turned out. I also bought new sprockets and a chain to replace. When I got the bike back it had been sitting behind a barn out in the open. I am not sure how long but it looked like it had been there for awhile. Do you think I should take the carb apart and clean it as well? I already drained the fuel and replaced all the fluids and plug.
idle problems

Well I adjusted the valves and put the new sprockets and chain on. I cleaned the K&N air filter when I changed the fluids. I tried to start it before I read your last post and I can start it with the choke all the way out, but if I close the choke it dies. It will not start with the choke closed. I am going to take the carb apart now. Once again thanks for the advice. Hopefully after that it will run right!
another question

Well I was out in the garage getting ready to take the carb off and I pulled off the cap of the air box discarge hose and a bunch of oil pured out. I know this isnt good. I am guessing that this might mean I have piston wear. If that is what that means then I think I am getting out of my league. I am thinking I should take it to a shop and have them do a compression check. Any advice?
