Hello all,

So I just recently took on a pretty major project for me. I knew someone who had an '86 VN750 that wouldn't run. I got the service manual for it and realized it needed a new stator/rectifier, so I took out the engine and replaced them. Got everything put back together, got new gaskets for the front bevel gear case (since it was shredded while uninstalling) and filled with fluids. To my surprise, it actually started! Only problem is that after it warmed up a little bit it started leaking oil. I have identified that it's coming from the front bevel gear case, but made sure that all of the screws were tightened and it seems to be seated correctly.

Can I just drain the oil, buy one of those "create your own gasket" liquid gasket things, and seal it back up?

Best to buy an OEM gasket and replace with the gasket IF that is where the leak is coming from. If it is the seals coming off the bevel gear shaft, this is a bit more of a challenge. There is a Kaw special tool to hold the splines while you remove bolts, etc. This must be done with a powerful air impact driver. I like to avoid using Permatex Form-A-Gasket anywhere on a motorcycle if possible.

Thanks for your reply! The only issue is that I had just purchased an OEM gasket and put it on the bike, and it's leaking. I'm almost positive it's coming from the actual bevel gearcase as I can see the bottom part of that is drenched in oil. Is the form-a-gasket stuff not too great then I'm guessing?

Edit: Just confirmed, it's coming from the actual gear case, NOT near the rubber boot at the rear.
