My husband is part of a VROC forum. He says several people have mentioned that there are no after-market pipes for the 500. Several people have tried drilling them & weren't happy with the results then wound up having to buy new pipes which were quite expensive.
From what I've been told, straight pipes on the parallel twin will give that ear-splitting headache giving chainsaw racket that you would not like at all for any length of time. I kind of like the gentle gurgle it makes while loafing around and the howl it makes when you twist the wick but that's a real subjective thing.
I've installed some slip-on mufflers that sound really good at idle and slow speeds, but they are loud. At highway speeds they can be a little irritating, but earplugs will minimize it. I got them from JC Whitney, 16 inch turnouts. They look much better than the stockers.
