Ummm... I guess the things you have to worry about are this -- if you can methodically break them down -- it might could be done.

Frame-- can it support the extra weight and torque?
Frame -- can it be modified to have the same mounting points?
Fuel -- would you be injected or carbed? -- what engine/tranny combo would you use?
Ignition -- what would your ignition look like?
Computer -- obviously some kind of fuse and relay center plus other electronics if fuel injected...
Drivetrain -- 1500s are stock as shaft drive -- 800s are stock chain drive -- there is a way to convert to chain drive, but I suppose if you modify the fuel, electrical, and frame of the bike, it wouldn't hurt to convert it to chain drive.

I don't think you are just looking at a drop in application -- you're going to have to know how to modify and stiffen... heck -- did you measure the engines yet?
I haven't seen it done -- but if you need to enlarge the frame you have another thing coming -- lol.

I'd honestly say spend the money on a new 900 and you'll get a much nicer bike on what you'd do putting a 1500 in a 800 frame.

Even though Kawi likes to play the cc wars with their bikes by bumping them 100cc's every so often -- it's not all down to cc's. The 800 and 1500 are two different beasts -- you may not like how your bike handles when you put a low down torque thing in that 800 frame.

With the bad economy and the onset of winter there's a sea of older 1500's out there to be had for under 5 grand. (Not knowing what area you're in, there might be less of a market)

By selling your 800 and adding what you would've spent on the conversion, you'll have a decent 1500 for around the same price. The added benefits of this are you won't end up with a heavily modified older bike with a low resale value, AND you'll know everything is at least up to factory specs.

If you're looking for a winter project that will get you a 1500, it would probably be easier to just fix up the wrecked 1500. Since heavy mods (like you're describing) can rack up the $$$ pretty quick, the price would most likely be comparable, and you'd end up with 2 bikes.

Using the 1500 frame, and engine, would the 800 transmission and clutch be compatible?

Old thread, but still raises questions,,, like Why would anyone want to? Pretty sure my 800A would have outran my 1500 Nomad...

And you're right rbentnail, the correct question is "how much time and money will it take?" Not "can it be done,,,"

1500 engine is taller, Transmissions are integral to the engine cases on these bikes, not able to be separated + 1500 is shaft drive while 800 is chain drive,,, It would cost a LOT, and better own a machine shop unless you want to put the machinists' kid through college ;)

I did see a 1500 Classic with the 800A front end on it and rear nicely bobbed, made a good looking bike...

If you have a dye grinder and a Mig welder, you can put anything into anything. You could re-enforce the frame. Will it be worth it, it might be, that depends on your fabrication skills. If someone where going to give me a 1500cc engine, and the front end was any good or even it it wasn't), I'd make a trike out of it. Why not make something completely new. There are enough complete front ends on EBAY to do this kind of thing. Squeezing that big of a motor into that little bike, well, take the motor (if he's giving it to you) , go from there. I'd make a trike though.

This is a bigger engine, but something like this. It eould take less time, and maybe be cheaper in the long run if you used a solid axle rear end. :)
