Zx6r sounds like a ducati

Hey all, i'm new here and this is my first post :D . Anyway, I noticed a while back when i started my bike (it sat for about 6 months) it gave off a sound much deeper then normal. It almost sounds like a Ducati. It idles fine (with the exception of the deeper tone). It even runs but kinda ruff. At higher speeds seems to want to hesitate a bit. I've changed the battery (old one was dead), replaced the spark plugs, drained the tank, cleaned the fuel filter (the small one at the carb as well), and even pulled the carbs out and emptied them. I cleaned them as well but i did not actually mess with the floats, just used a bit of spray to clean the outside and inside.

I put everything back together but nothing has changed. Does anyone have a clue what else I can try? I've herd about possible carb sync'ing but the bike is a 2000zx6 with "only" 6500 miles. I'm shocked i even have a problem as it is, the bike is babied.

Any suggestions would help. Thanks

with my old bike, it had rust in the gas tank... i know you said you cleaned out the fuel filters and carbs, but the petcock on mine was clogged up... like it wasn't getting enough flow of gas... once i cleaned that up, it seemed to have worked fine.... i was getting these little hiccups at high speeds...

or maybe it just needs a good run... take the freeways and redline that baby to let it spit out any gunk it's got in the engine... heh... at least someone told me that it works...

Replaced the air filter and put in a brand new fuel filter. No change. At this point i'm not really sure where to go. As i said earlier, I think 6500 miles is just to low for anything huge to have gone wrong. At this point the only thing that hasn't been changed is the oil and the oil filter. I may just let it run idle for a while and see if it corrects itself.. but i think that is wishful thinking.

If you guys can think of anything else just let me know :-D

It sounds as though you could have left one of those rubber hoses off somewhere underneath the air box.

If you have taken the carbs off, they'll probably need a sync.

The little jets you see around the edge of the carby (looking down with the airfilter top removed) affect the way the motor runs also.

Mine were slightly clogged once from over oiling the filter. Made a huge difference to the way the bike ran.

Your valves should be ok at that mileage but it wouldn't hurt to check them for peace of mind.

Thanks for the replay. It's not a hose, the problem was present before i took the bike apart. When i replaced the air filter again i double checked and everything is snug.

I actually let it run a bit today and this is what i have found: Once you let it warm up to about 165/170 degrees, i let off the choke and the bike dies. It only starts with the choke. I'll scan the boards to see what i can find, i've deff seen a few posts about that. Again i could have to do a better job at cleaning the carbs.

Again, thanks for the replies, every bit helps.

Well I did a little homework. Seems people love this Sea Foam stuff. I picked some up an hour or so ago. Read a few reviews and I liked what i saw. Seems my issue isn't so uncommon. I ran the bike till 1/4 gallon of gas (new gas, not old gas). Dumped about half the bottle in the gas tank and ran the bike until it stalled. Started it up a few more times to make sure the carbs are full of this stuff. I'm going to let it sit for a day or two. Put gas back in it and see how it does after a few days. They say it will take a while to get it started but this seems to be the way people that had the best results have done it.

I'll let you guys know how it goes in a day or two.

Latest update: Basically i let the SeaFoam sit in the carbs for a day or 2. Then i put the premium in the tank and spent about 15 minutes starting it until all the seafoam was run out of the system. I noticed a difference right off the bat. Before i used the seafoam the bike died if you touched the throttle. It went from 35% running condition to about 90% in no time. So far so good. The only problem i'm seeing now is the bike is still raspy and deep sounding between 3k to 6.5k rpm, then it seems to go away above that. Again i may just need to put a few more miles on it and the improvement was night and day, but if anyone thinks i can resolve that another way feel free to let me know. Until thin ill just put a few more miles on it and hopefully all is good.
