This is a 1990 zzr600 (zx600D in the US) 17in x 4.5in rear wheel. This wheel as you can see matches the stock 500r wheel design perfectly. This rim cost me 45 dollars shipped from ebay and is straight as can be, I need to find the appropriate sprocket drive and cush drive (Ninja500r cush/sprocket drive is different and won't work) and a 230mm four bolt pattern rotor, zzr rotor wont work cause its 240mm in diameter. I have a friend who has his own shop (builds custom Harleys for prestigious rich a$$es) who will mill down the sprocket drive and rotor mount and or help me move the rear brake caliper stay outwards, make some spacers and voila! Instant (not really) 4.5 in rim.

Projected cost? Around $200 after all this and maybe black powdercoat. As you can see I have started to strip the paint but not finished yet, its going to have to see a glass bead blaster also..... Harley builder lets me do it myself if I don't want to pay him to do it.....so much fun  .

You guys will tell me that a 150/60 works fine on the stock rim size. I believe you, its just that I wan't to see if the zx600 rear wheel conversion can be done, and make it look stock at the same time and have people have to glance at it twice when I go out to Sonic on bikers nite! I'm stupid like that :p .

I'll keep ya''ll (can you tell I'm Texan?) updated as soon as the project starts rollin <=== HAAA! I made a funny..........

You should be able to go with a 180 if the swingarm will allow it. I would think a 170 for sure. Might be a tight squeeze though. Chain clearance and centerstand issues - keep that in mind when doing your mod.

Keep in mind.....

1Adam12, I have removed my centerstand. That wouldn't be an issue anymore......

I have a 1997 zx6 5 inch rim that could fit a 170/60. Its just that the maximum tire I can use in the 500r stock swinger with the zzr600 wheel is a 160/60.

This requires removing the chain guard and shaving of some of the inside weld of the right part of the swingarm. Then the chain clearance to the tire would be like 4-5mm. This exludes tire growth/expansion at speed combined with heat. You would be really pushing it there on a 500 swingarm!

Anyways the width of a 150/60 seems perfect. And is tried and true. Freakinout has a 150/60 on his back wheel and he seems to have no problems with swingarm clearance. He also has the advantage that his rear tire is very slightly being pinched width wise (150 on a 3.5in rim) so he has a couple more mm of space advantage on each side of the swinger over me when I mount a 150/60 on a 4.5 inch rim. Bah! I should be fine I hope......?! Is this correct Freakinout? Where art thou?

Quoted from a motorcycle tire fitment site:

"Important note: A tire's width changes about .2" for every 1/2" change in rim width (over or under the 'design' rim)."

Last but not least I made some research and a 150/60 tires allowable rim width is 4 - 4.5 inches.

Blah
