So I am really new to the motorcycle world, but have been looking for a small project bike to tinker with. After a long search a kind gentalman offered me a really clean looking 86 1000R at a steal of a price. He says other then a dead battery and it dripping a very small amount of oil when sitting for a long period of time it runs great. It has 34k miles. I will be looking at it in person, but not sure what to check for in regards to this specific model... that is where I need help. I've reads pages and pages on this bike, but found no buying guides. Thanks for any advice.

If it's a steal and you know what to look for with a used bike I fail to see what the issue is with the purchase of the bike.

Weakness of the bike?
Parts?

The 1000R was only a bit better than the 900.
It is heavy and good for a blast up the road and in it's day was very quick.
The 900 was 1/10 of a second slower and lads in the UK have had the 900 up to 158mph.

It's all good.
I have a manual that covers off the 1000r. If you have any questions PM me on the bike.

Cheers

The major weak point on these bikes is the oiling system. keep it topped up and check it before each ride or you'r gonna be rebuilding your motor and buying new engine cases.

FWIW, the entire Concours motor except transmission, carbs and cams, is a bolt in replacement and identical. I bought one a week ago to put in mine.

there isnt a whole lot I DONT know now about this bike, relating to the motor after spending 3 months building one, having a second motor now, and spending so much time on the rest of it just building EVERYTHING so I can ride it.
