2002 Bayou 220 Pilot screw adjustment

I just rebuilt the carb and I don't remember where the pilot screw was set. The manual says 1 1/2 turns out. I have heard some people on this forum say 2 1/2. What does the pilot screw adjustment affect?
Can someone that has messed with these tell me what seemed to work best for them. Any info would be greatly appreciated on this matter.

hi chasenfish yes you want to start off at 1 1/2 turns out from all the way in and go from there you can adjust it while runing and holdin the trottle up a little youll hear the motor change as the screw is going in er out you and you will now by the sound when its ajusted properly beacuse the rpms will sound right the motor rpms will go down when you adjust the screw in and up when the screw is let out find the happy middle if you go out to far itll stumble and in to far itll choke out good luck let us know how it comes out fer you

Does any one have a trick or tip on how to get to this screw while it is running. Flexible shaft screwdriver? I see that there are special 90 degree tools out there but I am looking for something that I can find locally just about anywhere.

I have the same model Bayou and the same problem you have. I will tell you how I have done it but I hope someone has a better method as it would help me also.

I use a pole barn 40 penny nail and grind a screwdriver tip on the point. Next I heat it to red hot with a torch and bend the tip a little less than 90 degrees. The pole barn 40's are heat treated and snap unless you heat them. Because of the restricted space it has taken three different offsets to adjust and I can't do it while the motor is running.

I have tried an assortment of stubby screwdrivers and a flexible shaft driver and they wouldn't work. If anyone else has actually adjusted one of these carburetors I would like to here how and what brand of tool they used.

i like your idea comfun1 i used a fine flat head srew that is used to repair seeing glasses its just right to fit in the hole and u can still get your hand in there to adjust it but my first screw driver i made i cut one down and put duct tape on the end of it for grip reasons of course lol -corey-

you can buy a finger tip flathead at harbor frieght. they are less than an inch long total length. I bought a set for $3.

Also the Pilot adjustment is for the first 1/3 of the throttle opening. the needle affects the middle 1/3 of throttle opening and the main jet affects 2/3 to WOT position. search the net for "jetting 4 stroke" you'll get tons of hits with proper procedures.

you can buy a finger tip flathead at harbor frieght. they are less than an inch long total length. I bought a set for $3.

Do you have that Harbor Freight part number? Their are two stores near me but I can't find this on their site. Do you use this while the bike is running?

you can adjust while running or shut if off and then restart it. the trick is after adjusting you whack the throttle open from closed to 1/3 open and see how crisp the transition is.

not sure on your carb but if the adjusters are on the motor side of the carb then they are fuel adj screws. if they are on the air filter side then they are air screws. the only difference is what and how they adjust. a fuel screw gives more fuel when coming out counterclockwise making it richer. an air screw gives more air coming out counterclockwise making it leaner.
