Hi Guys,

I am new to this forum. So if I am posting this in the wrong place or something please excuse me. I bought a 97 Ninja ZX6R with 12500 miles on it for USD 3200 last Saturday. I had to change the battery and I thought that was about it. the bike was running fine till yesterday and now the bike stalls whenever I close the throttle or at idling. I just have to keep the throttle open all the time which is kind of difficult when coming to a stop. I even let the engine run for a while with the choke on but I have the same problem even after he engine is quite hot. Does anyone know what the problem might be? I'll appreciate any help. Thanks.

Avoid using the choke as much as possible. On cold starts for about a minute max. as you knock it down, fouls plugs.
Your idle may need adjustment.
Plugs may be shot.
Air filter needs a change.
Air leaks around carbs and airbox boots.
Carbs may need to be overhauled and cleaned.

You might need a new battery altogether. Check the voltage on the battery you have now.
I put a brand new battery just yesterday. Followed all the instructions for a dry charge battery from Advance Auto Parts! I think the battery is good. I think I found the problem. One of the cylinders misfires sometimes. Maybe due to a bad spark plug. I am going to clean the plugs and put them back and probably a new air filter. Will adding a fuel system cleaner to the gas tank help??

I'd check your idle. When I first got my 250r last august they ahd the idle perfect, and then when I was starting it I realized that whenver I'd rev it, the rpms would almost 0 out and stall the bike someimes after I had had the choke running for a minute and then bumped it down... so basically I'm saying it might JUST be the idle. Good luck with it and let us knwo what the fix was when you figure it out for yourself.

Thanks for the replies guys. A friend of mine told me that I could buy a fuel system cleaner at Walmart and add to the gas tank. Does this help in keeping the carbs clean? Is there any particular brand you guys recommend? The local Kawasaki dealership does not carry anything like that but the guy told me I can try some of that stuff before taking the carbs out! It is extremely expensive to clean carbs. I live in Central PA. Does anyone know a place where it would cost less than $350?

Problem solved.....I think so

Hey Guys,

I think I solved the problem. The battery I put in wasn't probably fully charged. I let the bike sit for a day and I tested the battery today. It showe 12.8V. I started the engine w/o using the choke and let it warm up for about 5 minutes before racing it. I cranked the engine a few more times and tested the battery and it still showed 12.6V. I also put in some "Sea Foam" today and took the bike for a 25mile ride. There is no sputtering or stalling now and I felt the bike was very smooth. The exhaust note also changed like a lot of people told it would! I also checked with the guy I bought the bike from. He said he changed the plugs, air filter and re-jetted the carb last year and put about 1000 miles on the bike. I guess there is no problem with any of those parts. I just hope the bike will be fine from now. Thanks for all the advice people. I really appreciate it.
BTW I am from State College, PA. Is anybody from anyplace around? I'd like to ride with you guys if you have a riding group.
