Put a couple of layers of electrical tape on the bars before clamping the pegs or get an old inner tube(ask at the bike shops) and tape to cushion the clamps.

If you don't like the look of the pegs or want to move them, lacquer thinner will remove any tape residue from the chrome(be careful as it is very flammable).

Anything metal you put on chrome will scratch it. If you don't screw around with the clamps too much it will be fine, but if you are doing it just for fitment then put something between the clamps and the bars.

 

Yes, Cheaper pegs can and will scratch the bars. Had a friend who had it happen to him. When they are in the up position they tend to rub against the bars.

 

As Mfolks said,, go with the piece of inner tube, the chrome won't get scratched and the pegs will not slip.
