I haven't installed the OEM backrest so I can't help you there but here are a couple of pics to look at...............

 

Can't speak for the Kawasaki drivers backrest, but Leatherlykes and the Protac drivers backrest work just fine together.

I have the protac on my 1600, mounts the same way as the 1500, it's very easy to install. The mounts are not the greatest looking things but with the bags on you won't see them.

 

Do youself a favor & order a Grasshopper backrest/ @ $105 or so. easy install more room & looks better. The F/S one shoved me up on the tank & hit me too high in the back. YMMV Kawasaki

 

Thanks. How does it attach under the passenger seat and does it make it harder to get the seat on and off. This looks like what I'm looking for.

 

I've got a Grasshopper backrest we had on our 1500, if you are interested I'll let it go cheap. We put a Mustang seat on the bike and don't need the backrest anymore. It's a decent backrest. The only thing I didn't like about it is it uses the single bolt that attaches the passenger pillion as it's attachment, so if you kick the backrest getting on or off it can cause it to misalign and then you have to grab it and straighten it out.

 

I think you should take Dan L up on the offer. It slips on / off w/o messing with the seat. Doesn't effect seat removal. I'm very happy with mine!!

Supplemental hardware kit is required when mounting Adjustable Driver Backrest (K53043-064) & (K53043-067) to Vulcan 1500 Classic models with saddlebags.
FYI: You can get the backrest and mounts really cheap at accessories4bikes.com.
