Output shaft bearing.

I'm having my output shaft bearing replaced. The dealer left a mess. saying my drum is showing wear and in 1000 miles I'd be looking at a tyranny. Does anybody know what drum he talking about. I have disc brakes so that out. Tried looking a a parts list but all they had was a brake drum. Help.

Shift drum. It's in the transmission. The shift lever (via a linkage) causes it to rotate and move the shift forks.

Year, model, cc's would help.

It's a 07 kawasaki vulcan 900classic Lt. Bearing, fork and drum $1500.00. Thoughts?

I started to hear a grinding noise. Sounded like brakes. Service manager recognized sound and put it on a lift, turned rear tire and had me listen to a clicking sound. It did sound like a bad bearing so I told him to repair it. When he opened her up he found that I needed a fork and drum.

I still don't see a question and based on your description it probably needs more than just "a fork and drum". Bearings fail on these usually in combination with a loose pulley which lets the shaft move (endplay) which can trash more parts.

25k miles. I have owned it only for one year. Only things I've had done prior was to replace clutch plates, front wheel bearings. Replaced bearings because I thought the grinding noise was coming from front wheel while riding. Replaced clutch plates because it was just starting to slip.

OK, here are some thoughts:

1. The noise you describe is consistent with output shaft bearing failure.
2. If you are not experiencing any grinding/gear jumping when shifting, then the transmission internals should be OK, but still checked.
3. Here is the important part....the belt front drive pulley MUST be tight on the output shaft. No play or slop is allowed. If there is any signs of wear, the best bet is to replace both. Finding rust in there is also bad. NOW is the time to look at this.
4. If the units are replaced, they should be assembled with either

SKF anti-fretting agent LGAF 3E

or
AS/65 Assembly Compound « Molyslip Canada Inc. :: Molybdenum Lubricants, Performance Lubricants, Copaslip Anti-Seize, EP2 Grease, Wear Reducing Lubricants, Oil Additive
or equivalent high moly content grease.

Just tightening the nut to tighten the pulley does not work and results in more wear and damage.

My output shaft bearing failed on my 2007 900 Custom at 22k. The dealer told me the repair would have been about $1,700 but my extended warranty was in effect so it was covered. The engine had to be removed and case split to replace that bearing. Definitely a grinding noise was the main symptom.
