Try some PB Blaster on the threads and find a long piece of pipe you can slip over the end of the ratchet to add more pressure while turning the nut.

Put about a 3 foot cheater bar on that box end.

 

Oh well, it'll have to wait until Monday. Got the PB Blaster, soused it every ten minutes for an hour, tapped lightly with a hammer likewise, every ten minutes. No can do. The cheater put a good bend in the wrench. Figured it was time to quit. Thanks for the replies.

 

Maybe you need some heat to help loosen things up. If you don't want to use flame, perhaps a soldering iron left sitting on the nut for a while will do it. Something else that may help is to hit the axle with a hammer while there's pressure on the wrench. Don't mushroom it, just give it some vibration to go with the wrench torque.

try turning it the oppisite direction ( you know lefty loosey) go with cheater bars on both sides of the bolt ,one on the bolt head and one on the nut. And no they don't need to be that tight.

 

Hey guys, I finally got it. Didn't want to resort to a torch, but after awhile you get stubborn and you hate to have something like this beat you. That mother was tight beyond all reason. Chain's nicely snugged up now per instructions in the manual.

Took a 120 mile ride this afternoon. My impressions: It's comfortable (much moreso than my previous bike, an Intruder), smooth riding, adequate power. Pegs are placed well. Docile bike, don't think it's gunna bite me without me doing something stupid. Got 48 mpg.

I have saddlebags on order, a pillion post, short windscreen. Think I'll leave the pipes alone for the time being, they purr nicely. Everybody has snarling loud pipes these days, or so it seems.

This really seems to be the place if you own a Kawasaki, lots of activity on this board.
